Location:
The traditional territory of the Musqueam extends throughout what is now Vancouver, reaching south into Richmond and north into Burnaby and New Westminster.
Language:
The Musqueam people speak hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓, a dialect of the Coast Salish languages.
Culture:
Known for their rich traditions in fishing, weaving, and carving. The Musqueam have a strong connection to the Fraser River, which is central to their history and culture.
Location:
The traditional lands of the Tsleil-Waututh are around Burrard Inlet, including parts of North Vancouver.
Language:
The Tsleil-Waututh speak a dialect of the Coast Salish languages known as hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓.
Culture:
They are stewards of the land and waters, with a strong emphasis on environmental preservation and cultural heritage.
The Coast Salish peoples are a group of ethnically and linguistically related Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. The term "Coast Salish" encompasses many tribes and nations, including those in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh are among the most prominent in the Greater Vancouver area.
Location:
The Squamish Nation's traditional territory includes areas around the Howe Sound and the Squamish Valley, extending into parts of North and West Vancouver.
Language:
Squamish people speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh sníchim, another Coast Salish language.
Culture:
Renowned for their canoe-building skills, storytelling, and cedar weaving. The Squamish have a deep spiritual connection to the land and water.
